On March 31 morning, Vietnam Airlines flight Hanoi - London numbered VN55 departed from Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi to Heathrow Airport in London. This is opening flight for the direct routes between the busiest and biggest airport in UK to two most important airports in Vietnam as Noi Bai International Airport and Tan Son Nhat International Airport. Accordingly, passengers of Vietnam Airlines in flights from Vietnam to London (UK) or vice versa will check in, send baggage, and get on board at Terminal 4 of Heathrow Airport, not Gatwick Airport as before.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of welcoming Vietnam Airline at the third largest airport in the world with the participation of Vietnam Ambassador in UK - Nguyen Van Thao, and many representatives of aviation companies and airlines, Mr. John Holland-Kaye - CEO of London Heathrow Airport said that Vietnam is becoming an attractive for tourism and business. He affirmed, that Vietnam Airlines has the exploitation at Heathrow Airport is a good news for UK, as it ensures a direct route to an important developing economy. Mr. Le Thanh Dung, representative of Vietnam Airlines branch in UK said that the exploitation of the airline at Heathrow Airport will help passengers of Vietnam Airlines receive benefits from international-class facilities to widespread network of the airport. Besides, the transfer creates favorable conditions to increase the frequency of Vietnam Airlines direct route England – Vietnam and the number of passengers to meet the increasing travel demand of passengers to Vietnam and Indochina.
The Vietnam Airlines' representative stressed to cooperate with Heathrow Airport and aviation partners to ensure the development of tourism and trade connections between two countries. London Heathrow Airport is the first international approach of Vietnam Airlines which is selected to exploit the new Vietnam Airlines fleet - B787. From Quarter II of 2015, apart from the exploitation of new modern aircrafts as B787 and A350, the airline started the program on upgrading the quality of service, new brand identity system; and improved its position as one of leading airlines in the region.
The frequency of flights from Hanoi to London and flights from Ho Chi Minh City to London will increase from 4 flights/week to 5-6 flights/week; and, there will have flights from Vietnam to London every day in summer 2016. The number of Vietnam Airlines passengers transported in Vietnam - UK flights in 2014 was 90,803, increasing sharply since the opening of direct route from Vietnam to England in late 2011.
