How to bring pets on airplanes is one of frequently asked questions received by airlines. The service must be considered carefully. It must be suitable to regulations of air carrier; at the same time, passengers have to suffer any risk or damage to pets.

Currently, among domestic airlines in Vietnam, Vietnam Airlines is only carrier allowed to bring pets on board in cabin. According to the spokesman of VNA, Mr. Le Truong Giang said the company only accepts to transport pets/animals (dogs, cats) in cabin. Each pet is about 10 week old and weighs no more than 6kg. Yet, Vietnam Airlines service on pet carriage is applicable to Business class passengers, Gold/Titanium tier members of Golden Lotus Plus, and members of Elite Plus in SkyTeam.

Passengers can buy Vietnam Airlines ticket for pets to bring into the passenger compartment (for animals such as dogs, cats, or animals can be transported as Vietnam Airlines checked baggage, and passenger pays for fee. If passengers carry a large number of animals (dogs, cats, birds), they will be carried in form of cargo which is guarantee by a transport company. Pet carriage service is applied only on Vietnam Airlines international flights from Hanoi/Saigon/Da Nang to Paris/Incheon/Busan/ Guangzhou/ Taipei/Kaohsiung. Other passengers not belonging to the above mentioned list, animals/pets will be transported as checked baggage. The service needs booking 36 hours before the scheduled departure time. Pets /animals must be accompanied by quarantine and vaccination certification, entry permits and other permits from the country at the point of departure, transit or destination as specified. Passengers should contact the Embassy of Vietnam in the destination to know about the laws on immigration pets.

Vietnam Airlines domestic flights only transport pets as checked baggage. Requirements for pet carriage should be made at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time. Passengers should contact the Veterinary Department, center for prevention and quarantine of animals in order to be granted local animal quarantine and vaccination. Only pets in good health condition checked by vet and not smelly are accepted for carriage. If pets in weak health condition or being pregnant will be denied. Moreover, passengers have to accept all risks of injury, illness or death of a pet during transportation.

Passengers must prepare for pet cages (cage is made of plastic or metal). Cage must be large enough for pets to be comfortable. Pet food should be prepared enough for a short journey and full of drinking water. If passengers want VNA staff to take care pets/animals, passengers have to prepare food, as the airline does not provide animal food. The carriage fee will be counted in accordance with the weights of cage and pet. To pet of under 9kg, the fee is 250,000 VND. To pet of from 9 to 16kg, the fee is 400,000 VND. And, the fee is 700,000 for pet of 16-32kg. If the weight of pet exceeds allowance, the carrier will consider the way to transport and fee.
