Tan Son Nhat International Airport expands domestic terminal

Airports Corporation of Vietnam is planning to expand the domestic terminal in Tan Son Nhat International Airport in anticipation of a rise in passengers in coming years. This project promises to most conveniently serve passengers’ demand.

A new terminal is located in the middle of the old domestic terminal and international terminal which Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has been planning to expand capacity to meet 5 million passengers per year. New procedure area in Tan Son Nhat International Airport will be given passengers’ procedures to domestic flights of two airlines, namely VietJet Air (VJA) and Jetstar Pacific (JP).

According to Mr. Tran Viet Hung, Deputy Director of the Tan Son Nhat International Airport and Director of Tan Son Nhat Operations Centre, in order to improve service quality and to reduce passenger congestion during aviation procedure processing, especially at the peak time, This biggest airport in Vietnam has extended the domestic terminal with a total area allocated to renovate of 2,140 square meters. Equipment and facilities in this area is equipped with a completely new and modern. Simultaneously, security screening equipment is upgraded in the most modern way, enhancing aviation safety and reducing procedure time for passengers.

Accordingly, the current domestic terminal will be expanded by 2,000 square meters of lounge for passengers boarding bus to their flight, along with the technical area of 500 square meters. Once completed, this station will ensure to serve 4,500 passengers at the peak time, increasing the capacity of the domestic terminal over 12 million passengers per year. All the equipment is installed completely new which includes procedure counters, baggage carousels, offices, restrooms...In addition,  security screening zones, bus zones, mechanical and electrical zones are also scaled up to over 2.600 square meters.

As representatives of ACV, the procedure zone insists of 36 counters. Accordingly, Jetstar Pacific and VietJet Air were officially transferred to operate in this new section from 21th April; in which, Jetstar Pacific will put 12 procedure counters into operation, and VietJet owns 24 check-in counters left. There are also two breaking ticket counters of JP and VJA, 4 security screening entrances, 6 boarding gates, 3 baggage scanners, 3 hand luggage scanners, and 3 magnetic and metal detector gates.

This is a part of a project to repair and expand the domestic terminal in Tan Son Nhat International Airport which ACV takes a role as an investor and implement. Old procedure area will be started constructing, repairing and expects to come into operation after four months. ACV announced plans to expand the maximum of Tan Son Nhat International Airport while Long Thanh international Airport is pending to be deployed in next decade.

Tan Son Nhat airport reaches 20 million passengers since late 2013, which is earlier compared with the design calculated to 2015. Even at the peak times, this number is up to 550 flights per day. Currently, Tan Son Nhat International Airport retains 44 carriers exploiting domestic and international flights from Ho Chi Minh City. During peak days, the airport might welcome 13,000-14,000 passengers; this number is more than 21,000 on Tet holiday. Eventually, in peak days during Tet holiday, the number of passengers increased 28,000 - 29,000 each day.
