Domestic Carriage (no international sectors on the itinerary)

Any claim for lost, damaged or delayed baggage must be reported in writing to Qantas within timeframes as follows:

- 3 days in the case a part only of an item of checked baggage or cabin baggage is damaged, lost or destructed, after remainder receipt date of the item.
- 21 days since the case of loss of the total item from the intended receipt date.

International Carriage

Any claim for lost, damaged or delayed baggage must be reported in writing to Qantas within timeframes as follows:

- In case your baggage is damaged, as soon as you know the damaged baggage after you have received the baggage, you have made a report at the latest within 7 days.
- In case your baggage is delayed, you need to make a report within 21 days from when the baggage has been provided available to you.

Special baggage

Pet Type: Perro De Presa, American Pit Bull, Japanese Tosa, Dangerous dogs (full and cross bred), Brazilian Fila, Dogo Argentino, , Pit Bull Terriers, Canario and Presa Canario, kittens and puppies under eight weeks of age and animals that demonstrate aggressive behaviors or show excessive chewing or cage destruction are not permitted on any Qantas or QantasLink service.

Brach cephalic (snub nosed) dogs (full bred only), Bull Dog French, Bull Dog British/English, Pug, Pekingese, Boston Terriers and Japanese Chin are allowed on flights of five hours or less.

Brach cephalic (snub nosed) dogs (full bred only), Bull Dog French, Bull Dog British/English, Pug, Pekingese, Boston Terriers and Japanese Chin are allowed on flights greater than 5 hours (international) where a Form of Acknowledgement and Indemnity is completed by the owner and submitted on lodgment with the Shipper’s Certificate and other transport papers.

The American Terrier: For pet under 14 weeks of age, permitted as cargo on all sectors provided it is lodged in an approved wooden or wire dog cage, no plastic dog cage permitted. If 14 weeks and over, lodgment can only be made by a pet transport company in a CR-82 (wild dog) cage, no other cages permitted.

English Staffordshire Terrier is allowed as cargo on all sectors provided it is lodged in an approved wooden or wire dog cage, no plastic dog cage allowed.

Guard or racing animals, animals that are a part of the defense forces and fresh water live fish (aquarium type) have to be transported as freight.

Special baggage

All cages have to meet the specifications presented in the IATA Live Animal Regulations. Ensure that the container meets these requirements before the travel day.

Small (equivalent to one unit of baggage):
- Made of plastic material with absorbent mat and suitable for cats and small dogs up to small terrier size.
- Size: 56cm in length / 30cm wide / 38cm in height.
- Maximum weight (including pet): 15 kg.

Medium (equivalent to two units of baggage):
- Made of polypropylene material with absorbent mat and suitable for dogs up to cocker spaniel size.
- Size: 66cm in length / 40cm wide / 52cm in height.
- Maximum weight (including pet): 20 kg.

Large:
For larger pets you have to provide an approved crate, which meets criteria as follows:
- Wire mesh - minimum of 8 standard wire gauge.
- Escape proof hinges and latches.
- Bottom covered with a leak proof galvanized tray with corners and edges soldered and rolled up to 9cm.
- Tray bottom to be covered with absorbent material to avoid leakage.
- Show crates must be particularly locked. It is the customer's responsibility to provide adequate locks for the crate.
- Must not exceed 84cm in height.

Alternatively portable kennels or a small container may be accepted provided the construction and ventilation is considered full and it meets all size restrictions and general criteria.
Acceptance of Animals and Pet Packs:

An animal and/or container will not be accepted when:
- The container is not sufficiently sturdy or is in disrepair and the animal is likely to escape.
- The container or animal is unclean.
- The animal appears diseased.
- The animal is unduly savage.
- The container could cause injury or suffering to the animal.
- The container fails to meet the IATA regulations stipulating that the animal must be able to:
- Stand up straight;
- Lie down without being cramped; and
- Turn around within the crate/kennel.

Restrictions about the height limit the carriage of livestock to small and medium pet packs on the B717 aircraft and small pet packs on the F100 aircraft.

Qantas has the right to refuse carriage of a pet for any reason, including:
- Safety or security reasons.
- In order to comply with applicable laws, regulations or orders.
- Non-compliance with our directions by the person travelling with the pet.
- Animals showing aggression or of an overt aggressive nature.
- Animals showing excessive signs of chewing or cage destruction at time of lodgment.

Dangerous Goods are items/articles that may cause the danger of the safety of an aircraft or persons on board the aircraft. They are also known as restricted articles and hazardous materials. Their carriage on aircraft is governed by the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority Regulations.

Passengers are allowed to carry certain dangerous goods provided concrete requirements are complied with. The following information summarizes those requirements. It is important to note that allowances are for personal use only. Commercial quantities are not allowed as passenger baggage and must be transported as freight.

Aerosols – Non-Flammable Gas: Carried as checked baggage and requirements are only for sporting or home use

Alcoholic Beverages: Carried as carry-on baggage and checked baggage. The requirements include:
- up to 5L of alcohol (between 24%-70% alcohol) per passenger
- securely sealed in retail packaging

Ammunition: carried as checked baggage and requirements include
- holder of a valid firearms license (you will be asked to show it at check-in)
- allowed up to 5kg gross per person (allowances cannot be combined in the one suitcase)
- securely packaged (individually separated within the container)
- When ammunition is packed within a locked firearms case, the ammunition must be in a separate locked container.

- If a pyrotechnic trigger is fitted.

- Up to four cartridges is permitted per passenger
- Up to 28g or 50ml per cartridge
- Securely packaged eg. small plastic bag, in a repair kit etc
