Are Lithium batteries restricted on aircraft of China Airways?
Hand baggage
CAA has revised the draft regulations to incorporate spare lithium batteries used in consumer electronic products as a Dangerous Goods Item in compliance with the IATA regulations on carrying lithium batteries on aircraft. Regulations on the carrying of lithium batteries (including lithium or lithium ion cells or batteries) on aircraft:
• Permitted to carry on or check-in the cells or batteries without agreement from the airline: In compliance with the maximum 100 Watt-hour specifications (or lithium metal, lithium ion cells or batteries with a lithium content of not more than 2g): spare lithium batteries may only be placed in the carry-on baggage. The batteries shall be individually protected to prevent short circuit upon contact with positive or negative terminals, coins, keys or other metals;
• Cells or batteries secured inside mobile phone, camera or other electronic devices with its positive and negative terminals covered and protected by the casing, may be placed in carry-on or checked-in baggage.
• Carry on cells or batteries that require permission by the airline: lithium cell or battery with a Watt-hour rating exceeding 100 Wh but less than 160 Watt-hour.
• The lithium cell or battery used in typical camera, mobile phone or notebook are of reasonable capacity, however the capacity of spare lithium cell or battery used in some devices (large electronic devices such as the professional camera used by television channels) exceeds 100 Watt-hour.
• The conversion method: Some lithium cells or batteries on the market are labeled with Watt-hour (Wh) information, but the majority is labeled with Voltage (V) and milli-Amps-hour (mAh) information. Watt hours (Wh) are determined: Voltage (V) x milli-Amps-hour(mAh) / 1000 = xxWatt-hour(Wh).
For example: The battery of a mobile phone is labeled: 3.7 V, 1020 mAh;
Conversion: 3.7 V x 1020 mAh / 1000 = 3.774 Wh
