On November 5th, in Sapa Town, Chairman of Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment, Mr. Dang Huy Huynh rewarded the recognition of "Vietnam Heritage Trees" to the Board of Directors of Hoang Lien National Park. Two groups of plants protected by the Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Hoang Lien National Park and recognized as heritage trees are raw twig rhododendrons and spruces (or fir). According to the survey and investigation of Vietnam scientists, around Fansipan Mount at 3,143 meters on majestic Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range, and in Hoang Lien National Park (Sapa), there are populations of 250-year-old raw twig rhododendrons, with 56 individuals from 11-15 meter tall in an area of about 1,000 square meters, at the altitude of 2,700 meters. There are 36 wild species of rhododendron. Most of them are very beautiful with red, pink, yellow, white, and purple colors. Here is known as the "Kingdom of Rhododendron flowers in Vietnam". As at the altitude of 2,000-3,000 meters above the sea level, there are giant hundred-year-old rhododendron trees with big body and bloom at the end of spring.
This is especially rare genetic sources of rhododendron species growing naturally in Vietnam. It is strictly protected in Hoang Lien National Park. Propagation studies are being conducted to preserve the precious genetic resource for some endemic flowers. Also here, there is fir growing at the altitude of 2,700 meters above the sea level, with 26 individuals, from 18-20m tall, roots of 50-80cm in diameter, about 300 years old, distributed in the center of this national park with an area of approximately 1,000 square meters. This plant is listed in the Vietnam Red Book. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Indochina Program recommended that there must have measures to conserve and propagate as the verge of extinction. Hoang Lien National Park is one of the important SUFs in Vietnam, situated at the altitude from 1,000 to 3,000 meters above sea level in the northwest of Hoang Lien Mountain Range, including the highest peak of Indochina - Fansipan (3,143m).
With the total core area of 28,509 hectares, the national park has a strict protection zone occupying 11,875ha, an ecological restoration zone of 17,900ha, and a buffer zone of 38,724ha. Plants in Hoang Lien National Park have 2,024 species of 200 families, including 66 species in Red Book of Vietnam, 32 rare species, and 11 endangered species such as green juniper, bamboo pine, and red pine... The number of endemic plant species accounts for 25% of endemic plant species in Vietnam. That explains why Hoang Lien National Park possesses the most precious genetic forest in national parks in Vietnam. According to Nguyen Quang Vinh, Director of Hoang Lien National Park, the two groups of rhododendrons and fir in the national park recognized as one of natural plants listed in Vietnam heritages will enrich and engage more tourist attractions for visitors. The recognition of two populations of heritage trees will facilitate the mobilization of resources for the conservation of genetic resources of two rare endemic species in particular, and flower species and forest wealth in general, at the same time, to attract tourists to enjoy eco-tourism here.
