To look back great achievements of Vietnam Science and Technology in 2014, Ministry of Science and Technology in coordination with Vietnam Television held a program “Impressive Vietnam Science and Technology 2014”. The program took place to release and honor successful science and technology events and achievements in 2014. At the same time, through the program, great contributions of scientists were praised and honored in the course of Vietnam economic development and social sustainability. Accordingly, top nine impressive honored science and technology events in 2014 belong to fields of fundamental science, appliance science, mechanical engineering, physics, agricultural science, and high technology, etc. All events have great breakthroughs, premising for science and technology in the years to come.
In terms of mechanical engineering, Vietnam launched and exported HRD offshore rigs for the first time. The event defined Vietnam technology in rigging and created increasing demand in international cooperation. In physics field, Vietnam succeeded in producing Rotavin vaccine to preventing diarrhea for the first time. In May 2014, the state-level research paper on Rotavin vaccine was accepted, opening a new hope for millions of Vietnamese children when using the vaccine. So far, Vietnam is one of the first four countries producing diarrhea prevention vaccine. Rotavin vaccine was certificated and used with a producing scale of 300 thousand of doses/year. It is expected that when operating the EPI program, the vaccine will be produced with 1.6 million of doses per year by 2016 to meet the domestic demand and export in the future. The field also witnessed an achievement in a successful pancreas-kidney surgery from a body with a dead brain at Military Medical Institute 103.
Technologically, Vietnam high technology also gained a great achievement. That Integrated Circuit Design Research and Education Center (ICDREC) officially commercialized products, opening new chances for many industries. In terms of agriculture, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) rewarded three prizes for mutation breeding, national seeds and hundreds of thousands hectares of plantation. In addition, Ta Quang Buu Award was given to two scientists as Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ba An in physics and Professor Nguyen Huu Viet Hung in mathematics.
The next impressive event is that Science and Nano Technology Magazine and Mathematics Magazine were voted in SCOPUS – the biggest database in the world, which helps users have an overview about research’s result in fields of science, technology, medical, social and humanitarian science. The event of Ba Son Shipyard creating new missile ships for Vietnamese People’s Navy is also another 2014’s impressive event. This is the first ship missiles generation manufactured in Vietnam under the copyright transfer of Russia with complex technological process, high accuracy, consistency and technical expertise.
The last event as well as the most important one is that Vietnam organized Vietnam Science and Technology Day. The event marked the consideration of Vietnam government in the role of the industry in the development of science in particular and the development of Vietnam economy in general. Simultaneously, the day also raised the passion and creativity of scientists countrywide, especially the youth.
