Vietnam and Japan promoting tourism

Thu, 28 Aug 2014. Last updated Tue, 03 Apr 2018 14:17

In August 22nd and 23rd 2014, leaders of Japan Association of Travel Agents visited Ho Chi Minh City to have a meeting with Vietnam Tourism Association about Vietnam and Japan promoting tourism cooperation.

In possession of the rapid increase in the number of Japanese tourists visiting Vietnam in recent years, Japan is one of the largest markets of Vietnam tourism. Specifically, in 2013, the number of Japanese visiting Vietnam broke the record when reaching over 600.000 arrivals. In the first six months of 2014, Vietnam has welcomed 317.849 tourists from Japan. Meanwhile, in 2013, there were 85.000 Vietnamese visiting Japan and that number of the first half of 2014 was 59.000. Although the number of tourists of two countries has increased rapidly, it still does not commensurate with the close diplomatic relation between Vietnam and Japan.

New flight route Da Nang - Tokyo

In order to expand the market and promote growth in the quantity as well as the quality of Vietnamese tourists visiting Japan and vice versa, in August 22nd and 23rd, leaders of Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) along with representative of leading travel companies in Japan such as Nippon, Kinki Nippon, JTB, Japan Gray Line, Tobu Travel, Toptour, Nokyo, Hankyu, Tonichi, and KNT visited Ho Chi Minh City to have a meeting with Vietnam Tourism Association (VITA) and 12 tour operators in Vietnam. At the meeting were representatives of Japan National Tourism Organization – JNTO and Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways. This activity is expected to contribute significantly to the promotion of tourism between the two countries.

To achieve the goal of a rapid increase in the number of Japanese visiting Vietnam up to 1 million and Vietnamese visiting Japan up to 200.000 in 2017, Vietnam Society of Travel Agents (VISTA) under VITA has recently completed 2 important activities including founding Japan Outbound Travel Club – JOTC in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City whose members are 45 leading tourism companies in Vietnam and establishing the representative offices of Vietnam travel agents in Japan which was launched on June 4th 2014 in Tokyo.

Japanese culture introduced to Vietnam

The tourism potential between Vietnam and Japan is assessed to be not fully exploited yet. Therefore, the two countries should hold more and more exchange cultural and tourism events. Most recently, an exhibition of Japanese Antiquities has been held in Ho Chi Minh City. The exhibition is hosted by the History Museum in Ho Chi Minh City with the aim of introducing the trade between Japan Vietnam in Nguyen’s Dynasty in 16th century. The exhibition displayed around 300 artifacts sorted by topics of household wares, Buddha Statute, coins and jewelry. Tourists visiting the exhibition might take a firsthand look at tsuba, hand-protecting pieces on Japanese sword, and netsuke, a small ornaments carved with the faces of human and god. It is expected that cultural activities will be more developed in the near future.
