Ms. Ameerah Haq, Under Secretary General of the United Nations and Head of the Department of Field Support, several senior officers of the Ministry of National Defense along with ambassadors and military attaché attended the ceremony. Vietnam Peacekeeping is the specialized agency under the Ministry of National Defense and the Agency Standing Steering Committee. The centre is responsible for researching, advising, training, preparing, deploying, and commanding the entire forces participating peacekeeping operations of the UN. This centre is expected to sustain Vietnam security as well as Vietnam society.
At the opening ceremony, General Phung Quang Thanh, the Minister of National Defense has stated that the aim of Vietnam Peacekeeping Centre is to implement foreign policies of Vietnamese government which is proactive in international integration and willing to contribute responsibly to the general work of the international community as well as the mission of peacekeeping operations of the UN. He said that during the last decade, Ministry of Defense of Vietnam has been actively preparing for this activity. Since 2005, the Party and State of Vietnam has sent several delegations to Cambodia, Japan, Nepal, Germany, France and so on to study their models, mechanisms and experiences on preparing and deploying forces.
With the help of international friends, nearly 200 officers, soldiers and army medical corps have been trained in English about knowledge and processes necessary for peacekeeping operations. According to the project, Vietnam will send a field hospital level 2 and a company of soldiers to South Sudan in 2015. Initially, the Ministry of National Defense assigned 2 liaison officers on duty. They are Lieutenant Colonels Mac Duc Trong and Tran Nam Ngan.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mr. Vu Duc Dam, Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnamese government has emphasized that this event has a greatly important meaning which marks the official participation of Vietnam in peacekeeping forces of the UN. Vietnam underwent 2 devastating wars against foreign invaders, therefore it always desires for peace. He added that peace could only be maintained when all countries, regardless of size and power respected others’ independence and sovereignty. All countries and territories in the world have to share the responsibility of keeping peace through practical and concrete actions. Unilateral actions against international laws must be rejected. It is believed that Vietnamese peacekeeping forces will always complete their missions in accordance with the objectives and regulations of the United Nations, positively contributing to the general mission of UN.
Ms. Ameerah Haq said that through setting up the centre and dispatching two officers to South Sudan for peacekeeping operations, Vietnam took a major step forward in its co-operation with the international community.
