Different from previous festivals that gathered veteran artists, National Ca Tru Festival 2014 will focus on introducing new generation of this art form. The information was provided by Master Pham Minh Huong, Deputy Director of Vietnam National Academy of Music. The festival has the participation of 26 Ca Tru units and clubs from 15 provinces and cities across the country in possession of Ca Tru including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong City, Northern Provinces of Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh, Phu Tho, Thanh Ha, Thai Binh and Vinh Phuc, and the Central Provinces of Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Quang Binh.
Each club participating in the festival will design a performance in a maximum duration of 30 minutes, performing 5 out of 15 classic genres of Ca Tru Vietnam. In addition, the Organizing Committee also encourages clubs, troupes and individuals to perform other genres which have been restored and explored recently. The judge committee will award on the basis of 5 criteria: Ca Tru space, best vocalist, best band, potential vocalist and potential band.
This year, the system of the festival’s prize has changes. In addition to the award category dedicated to clubs, the organizing committee will also award medals and presents for excellent individuals. Explaining this change, Mr. Dang Hoanh Loan, musician, general director and professional adviser of National Ca Tru Festival said that it is to encourage, develop the love of Ca Tru singing in the community. The expansion of the prize structure is implemented in accordance with the regulation on awarding the title of People’s artisan and meritorious artisan in intangible cultural heritage issued by Vietnamese government coming into force since August 7th 2014.
The National Ca Tru 2014 is held by the Academy of Music under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in collaboration with provincial Departments of Culture from August 26th to 28th 2014 at the Head Office of the Academy of Music in My Dinh District. The festival will feature unique special performances and competitions between clubs and troupes.
Ca Tru is a traditional genre of chamber music featuring female vocalists accompanied by band of traditional musical instruments in Northern Vietnam. In the past, it flourished as one of the most popular cultural activities associating with festivals, customs, beliefs, literature, music, thoughts, and philosophy of Vietnamese. Until now, it still plays an indispensible part in Vietnamese culture. In October 2009, Ca Tru was officially recognized as an intangible cultural heritage needing urgent safeguarding by UNESCO.
