How about service animal in Cathay Pacific flights?
Special baggage
In compliance with regulations issued by Hong Kong government authorities, Cathay Pacific Airways only accepts to carry dogs in passenger cabin.
1. Importation/Transit/Transhipment of dogs into Hong Kong
Dogs cannot be brought into or transit through Hong Kong without a Special Permit. Additional prior approval from AFCD is also required for in-cabin transport of a Disability Assistance Dog.
The airline only accept service animals for travel in cabins if:
- They meet the AFCD definition of Disability Assistance Dog (DAD);
- The passenger has obtained a Special Permit from AFCD for the Importation/ Transit/ Transhipment of the dog;
- The passenger has obtained prior written approval from AFCD for in-cabin transportation of the Disability Assistance Dog; and
- Original copies of all documentation required by AFCD are presented at check-in and on arrival into Hong Kong (we also encourage passengers to provide advance copies of this documentation to our reservations department as far in advance as possible).
All other animals as pets will be carried separatly. Depending on each passenger’s situation, there may be quarantine regulations imposed.
2. Importation/ Transit/Transhipment of dogs to other countries than Hong Kong
Dogs complying with the definition of Guide Dog or Assistance Dog will be carried in passenger cabin.
Definitions according to HK CAD:
- Guide dog: is one that is trained to provide mobility assistance to a blind or partially sighted person. A guide dog is one that is trained by an individual or organization that is accepted by and affiliated to the International Guide Dog Federation.
- Assistance dog: is one that has been specifically trained to assist a disabled person and that has been qualified by an organization registered as a member of the Assistance Dog International and Assistance Dogs Europe. The dog will have been granted certification by the relevant country’s Health Department on the basis that the dog’s high standard of training, behaviour, health and welfare are such that it should be permitted to accompany its client, owner or partner at all times and in all places.
The dogs imported or travelling in transit or transhipment to countries other than Hong Kong should comply with the regulations of their final or transit destination, as well as the following HK CAD guidelines, to ensure flight safety.
• Larger dogs shall be accommodated on the cabin floor at the owner’s feet.
• Smaller, lighter dogs may be carried on the owner’s lap.
• The dog needs to be properly harnessed and the leash of the dog must be secured to the owner’s seatbelt at all times during flight.
• Care and supervision of the dog is the sole responsibility of its owner and we require that the animal relieve itself in a way that does not create a health or sanitation issue inflight.
• Each passenger is allowed to carry one dog. If passenger wants to travel with two dogs, please contact the airline for arrangement.

What should I prepare to travel with pets in Cathay Pacific flight?

Passengers have to book tickets for pets:
• Contact the airline at least 48 hours prior to departure to confirm the acceptance of your pet.
• Your pet will not be allowed on board without acceptance of the pet as interline baggage at the time the reservation is made, and provided that your pet is in crate or container conforming to the IATA Live Animals Regulations.
• You have to provide some information about pets when making reservation: Type of pet, weight of the pet and cage, dimentions of cage, material of cage, valid health and vaccination certificates, entry permits and other documents required by Country of entry or transit (please check IATA Travel Centre under Customs, Currency & Airport information Section for reference)
Other requirements:
• Dogs must be put in a cage made of either solid fibreglass, rigid plastic, or metal with strong weld metal mesh.
• Passengers travelling with pets must prepare cages for their pets. These cages are lockable, escape proof, leak proof and clean. Pet containers that do not comply with Pet Container Requirement are not carried.
• Dogs must not be put in wooden containers (including plywood, hardwood, fibreboard, wickerwork and latticed wood).
• Cats can be carried in wooden containers.
• Animal containers must be provided with food and water.
• If the flight is longer than 12 hours, passengers must supply backup water.
• The container or cage must comfortable to the animal, and has sufficient pores for breathing.
On the day of departure, please follow the belows things to do:
• Present the original copies of your pet’s relevant certificates and documents at check-in counters.
• Place pet’s favourite toy in the container if needed.
• Make sure that your pet is healthy during the flight.
• Feed and hydrate your pet properly before departure.

Excess baggage
On routes that include stops in the Americas or Canada:
Passengers of First and Business class travelling with an infant can bring one extra piece of checked baggage 32 kg (70 lbs) with total dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 115 cm (45”).
Passengers of Economy class travelling with an infant can bring one extra piece of checked baggage 23 kg (50 lbs) with total dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 115 cm (45”).
In other routes:
Customers who are travelling with an infant are permitted one extra piece of checked baggage up to 10 kg (22 lb) that does not exceed 115cm (45”) in dimension.
Passengers of First and Business class travelling with an infant can bring one extra piece of checked baggage 32 kg (70 lbs) with total dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 115 cm (45”).
Passengers of Economy class travelling with an infant can bring one extra piece of checked baggage 23 kg (50 lbs) with total dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 115 cm (45”).

Does Cathay Airlines offer extra free baggage allowance for sporting equipment?
Excess baggage
There is no extra free baggage allowance for the carriage of sporting equipment, but it can still be carried as part of your free checked baggage allowance.

Is there free baggage allowance for mobility aids or assistive devices in Cathay flight?
Special baggage
Cathay Pacific accepts to carry mobility aids and other assistive devices. In flights from/to destinations in the US, there is no limit on assistive devices and mobility aids. In flights to/from other destinations, each passenger can bring one assistive device and two pieces of mobility aids, in addition to baggage allowance. For the passenger travelling on two or more sectors where there are different baggage policies for mobility aids and assistive devices, the most generous policy shall apply to all sectors.

Your baggage will be weighed at check-in counter where you can pay extra baggae fee (if required). If you know your baggage may exceed the baggage allowance, please spend more time and cost when checking in for your flight.

What will Cathay do if my baggage is delayed or damaged?
Mishandled baggage
Cathay will try their best to seek for the lost or delayed baggage. Yet, due to some objective conditions, the airline cannot ensure to find and reimburse all baggage to passengers. In case, passengers recognize their baggage lost, delay, or damage, please file a report with our Baggage Services Counter located at the Arrivals Hall prior to customs clearance.
