Western New Year in Vietnam is one of important holidays in Vietnam. The celebration of New Year according to Gregorian calendar becomes popular in Vietnam in recent years. Vietnamese people hold many interesting activities on the first day of a new year.

Solar New Year, also known as Western New Year is one of important holidays of many nations in the world. It is the first day of a year in Gregorian calendar. Western New Year in Vietnam is currently popular. But, Vietnamese people consider Lunar New Year their official traditional New Year. Western New Year might be firstly held in the period of the French colonialism when Gregorian calendar was used in Vietnam. In addition, people working at companies were allow to be off from work to celebrate the New Year day since Christmas. Todays, Western New Year is Vietnamized, and become a traditional holidays in Vietnam. During this holiday, Vietnamese government permit people to have days off, and hold relevant activities. This is also a chance for people going on a picnic, traveling, or just simply meeting each other and holding small parties.

The performances of fireworks to celebrate a new year are allowed by Vietnamese government. The displaying fireworks are only shown in events of Western New Year and Vietnamese traditional Tet. Thus, Vietnamese citizens, especially children, are looking forward to the fireworks performances which are believed to bring messages of love, peace and prosperity to the whole nation.

 

Music performance in New Year Eve

 

To celebrate one of important holidays in Vietnam, Hanoian also decorate streets brightly, especially light systems in main boulevards, living areas, parks, famous architectures and major tourists attractions in Hanoi. Many cultural and artistic activities are held during the holiday. Solar New Year seems to be an occasion for Hanoian in particular and Vietnamese northerners in general to prepare for Tet holiday or traditional New Year in Vietnam.

After Christmas, and especially Western New Year, along streets in Hanoi, especially in Hanoi Old Quarter, people rush into shops to choose colorful accessories to decorate their houses and Vietnamese New Year trees. Shopping malls, markets seem to be more crowded than usual, as people are busy with buying things for Tet holiday. In other places in Vietnam, celebration for Western New Year is also exciting and attracting both local people and foreign tourists who welcome New Year in Vietnam. The popularity of Western New Year celebration in Vietnam is not just a chance for international friends to have chances of exchanging culture between counties, but also creates favorable conditions for Vietnam to promulgate cultural and traditional values through this event.
